Internal Medicine – What does it involve?
Internal medicine physicians are an often confused group. Referred to as ‘internists’, they should not be confused with an ‘intern’ or a family physicians and general practitioners. Why? Because internal medicine jobs are a medical speciality dealing with adult diseases – whether they be the prevention, diagnosis or treatment.
After the required education, internists have a range of opportunities in the work environment. The standard medical office, the clinic or a hospital – or a combination. Internal medicine jobs can come in the form of salaried staff at the hospital or clinic, on call or through self employment or partnerships with other physicians to form clinics.
So what’s to like about being an internal medicine physician? The satisfaction of helping patients manage their well-being, being reasonably secure with constant work, very reasonable pay and little liability cost due to the lack of surgery involved in the job. Don’t forget the ability to sub specialise in a large range of areas such as cardiology, endocrinology and oncology etc.
So where’s the challenge? Coping with an overload of patients – especially when combining and office role with on call check ups on the side.
