The Increasingly Important Role of the Cardiologist
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the majority of developed countries worldwide. While there are unmodifiable causes to this – namely due to aging, there are 7 major reasons for this increase – smoking, lack of exercise, lack of fruits and vegetables, too much saturated fat, too much trans fats, too much stress and too much alcohol.
While common sense says that the solutions to this problem are simple – quit smoking, exercise more, eat healthier, take time to de-stress and have some self control, the reality is society values the hedonistic principles that we currently follow. If it feels good, it is good. The upside of this comes to those in the field of cardiology or in the process of specialising in cardiology – for obvious reasons.
As technology continues to advance, so does the role of the cardiologist. Fifteen to twenty years ago blockages were addressed via cardiac surgery, while currently blockages can be treated non-surgical cardiologists. What does this mean? Regular cardiology jobs and the ever changing face of medicine.
